KRAFT PULPING

The ffp laboratory has a set of rotating digesters (7ℓ) and one flow-through digester (7ℓ). Both types of digesters are used for simulating industrial Kraft pulping process related projects.

FIBRE FRACTIONATION

Fibre fractionation trials are conducted using a Noss Hydrocyclone test canister rig which can be applied in the laboratory or in the mill depending on the requirements of the clients.

PULP REFINING – LOW CONSISTENCY REFINING SYSTEM

The LC refiner is a single 8” (20 cm) disc Sprout Bauer refiner (pressurized refiner). The capacity of the refiner is 22 kW with a variable speed drive. The refiner rig consists of two agitated tanks (with capacity of 400 ? each). Refining plates vary depending on pulp type. The refiner performs pilot scale pulp refining trials. The impact of specific refining energy (SRE) as specific edge load (SEL) on pulp quality based on specific wood pulp materials or refiner plates configuration can be quantified as done in industry.

PULP BLEACHING

Simulation of various bleaching stages for optimisation of bleaching chemical usage and operating conditions: double oxygen delignification stage, chlorine dioxide stage, alkaline extraction stage, hydrogen peroxide stage and ozone stage.

PAPER MAKING AND PAPER TESTING

Rapid Köthen sheetformers, PFI mill, burst, tear, tensile, zero span tensile, stiffness, calliper, and smoothness testers. Optical measurements include: brightness, brightness reversion, ink concentration, opacity, whiteness, fluorescence and colour

saws, chippers, hammer and Wiley mills for sample preparation;
four pulping digesters for the processing of chemical pulp;
two papermaking machines for the manufacture of pulp hand sheets for evaluation of physical strength properties

The laboratory is also equipped with a variety of instruments for:
