Research into Fibre Processing

Research to date has included:
  • Evaluating the impact of pulp and paper manufacturing processes on South African fibre characteristics and end product quality, value and cost reduction.
  • Development of expertise on the characteristics of South African fibres and how they can be best exploited in pulping and paper making applications.
  • Development of standardized methods and techniques to evaluate the fibre resource, pulp and paper properties, and processing characteristics.
  • Studying the influence pulping aids with respect to Kraft pulping of South African grown wood resources
  • Mitigating high energy cost in South African pulp and paper industry through modified pulp refining
  • Research on improvement of Kraft pulping operations has also evolved into forest biorefinery producing value added products along with pulp production
